The winner of the Golden Lion for Best Film and this year’s Venice FIPRESCI Award, Happening is a suspenseful and potent adaptation of a semi-autobiographical novel by French writer Annie Ernaux, in which she dissects her experience of abortion. The film follows Anne, a young student who decides to have an abortion in order to finish her studies and escape her constrained existence in a working-class family. But it is 1963, abortion is illegal in France and the clock is ticking – Anne’s exams are approaching and her belly is growing. The search for an illegal abortion is proving more difficult than expected.

A French director of Lebanese origin. Prior to becoming a film director, she worked as a journalist and screenwriter. A member of the French organization Collectif 50/50 advocating equal representation of men and women in the film industry. Her debut feature was Losing It (2019). For her second feature, Happening (2021), she won the Golden Lion and the FIPRESCI Award at the Venice FF.
