The first film by the great and diverse Polish director Agnieszka Holland is a humorous psychological drama about the colourful life behind the theatre curtain. It centres on the life of Slawomir Szczepan, a young theatre director from Warsaw who goes to the provinces to put on his new play. The news of his arrival brings excitement to the monotony of the local theatre. The aged actor Krzysztof sees it as a chance to star in the role of his life, yet, for Slawomir, this is just another step towards a respectable career. A clash is inevitable.
