Anthony (Anthony Hopkins) is mischievous, cynical and stubborn. And 80 years old. It is a combination which his worried daughter Anne (Olivia Colman) unsuccessfully tries to navigate to get him to accept at least one of the numerous carers she persistently brings to his London flat. Anne is moving to Paris and will not be able to visit him daily. But Anthony’s memory is not what it used to be; memories flood and recede like ebb and tide, and his perception of reality gradually collapses. The Father is an impressive feature film by French novelist, playwright, and director Florian Zeller, based on Zeller’s play many compare to King Lear. The film premiered at Sundance.
