One of two feature films by Sarajevo director Vesna Ljubić, known for her documentaries, meditative poetic style and authentic, witty portrayal of the little people. The film is set in a small Bosnian town where the local railroad is the only contact with the outside world. When the order to close it arrives, trouble ensues for the railroad workers, as well as the locals. The Last Switchman of the Narrow Gauge Railway is a nostalgic and humorous ode to the era of the narrow-gauge railway and its workers, and an authentic depiction of a small town where life revolves around its train station.
She graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo and film directing at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. As a student, she assisted on Federico Fellini’s films. She directed two features, Defiant Delta (1980), and The Last Switchman of the Narrow Gauge Railway (1986). During the war, she made Ecce Homo (1994), an award-winning documentary that screened at various festivals. She also directed hundreds of radio programmes and dramas, for which she has received international acclaim.
